This summer I have really loved going thrifting with some of my friends and then upcycling raggitty old vintage clothes into beautiful original master pieces. During my last shopping trip, I was rummaging through the pant section hoping to find a fun floral print to bring some lush into my wardrobe, and I fall upon the eye catching magenta paint along with a couple other fun patterns in the same style. I proceed to the dressing room, and after a few solid minutes of critical decision making, I realize I have fallen upon a pair of dentist scrubs. Who knew I would be falling for a Doctor chic this season.
If you didn't know, Upcycling is a great way to reinvent old used clothes into original eye catching pieces. The best part about upcycling is not the fact that you are helping the environment but whenever someone asks, “omg that is adorable! Where did you get?” and with that flick of the wrist you can say “oh I made it”. Now you have everyone thinking your some new uprising fashion designer when in reality you made just a few small and easy alterations with some needle and thread. My upcycling journey first starts when my lovely Aunt Britt, generously gave me a few of her old vintage dresses. A Lot of the patterns were very bright and fun, which is practically perfect for summer. The only thing is, nothing seemed to fit quite right. The first piece I altered was this pungent yellow midi dress with long sheer sleeves and no fitting whatsoever. The dress gave me this very boxy silhouette which I did not appreciate.
What first came to my mind when I began brainstorming ideas to transform this hideous midi into a sexy and sweet matching set. I wanted to transform the top into a wrap top, but I later realized after cutting across the waist of the dress that a jacket would be the better option. The material was very thin and difficult to work with. I needed some help from a friend, so I phone my savior Julia Marco and we began to stick. We hemmed and hemmed and hemmed. Hours spent, sewing and piecing together a set that I would tragically never wear. No. I told myself. Complete the stitch. Complete the set. Finally we pieced together the skirt and were coming to the last finishing touches and then, Zziippipipip, the zipper began a sad slinky and useless article of the skirt. Without the zipper, the fitting of the skirt was torn to spreads and I would no longer be able to get the skirt on and off. Now I do have to admit, my procasination has taken over me and I haven't been able to make a trip to Hobbie Lobbie and purchase a zipper. So unfornutanely my sad excuse for a set, rest in the bottom of my pajama drawer. Untouched and unworn. It aches me everyday seeing potential laying in my demonizing drawers. I will rue the day that darn zipper snapped and all we did was laugh.
