Polychromic Glamour

Writer's picture: Chandler SimpsonChandler Simpson

We all know it. It’s apparent. Fashion is beneath decaying. It’s rotting. Not internally though. Every year, during the neglecting award show season, we see fashion flop after another. Flipping back the same burnt toasting flat jack until it’s a charred black. That’s how I have felt about fashion lately. Yet amongst this valley of ashes, I have concluded that these high end celebrities should not be the future faces of self expression. We need micro influences and ethereal bandage teens to take a ride on the train. What I wish more of the world would see, what I wish more of the fashion world would see is Tik Tok. I have had the app for about 3 years. Initially using the app to poke fun of the no nonsense weirdos that took the app seriously, lip synching and holding hands dancing behind a screen. Then everything changed. The global pandemic struck and users boomed. Igniting a wildfire of subcultures to flourish. Subcultures advertised to teens by teens. And with a whole generation encapsulated with hopeful fame, fashion was reborn.

I call it polychromic glamour. A type of style that is everything but neutral. Unserious and sultry. Show stopping madness. An over layering of statement pieces, mix match high knee socks, and surprisingly swimsuits as body accessories. Essentially the idea is chaos, but clean chaos. Distractingly unique, I have found myself flustered. Holding back the urges to bonfire my closet, ditch my original motives and spring myself into this devine appearance. Hot girl energy is unlocked. Monochromatic is too neat now. Also too simple. This strives towards a more abstract attachment of individuality, letting the clothes speak for itself. You take what looks and can't decide if it's funky, disco, grunge, y2k, modest, vibrant, subtle, or all of the above. Bottom line, it’s brilliant and I need to highlight some of the polychromatic pioneers of glamour.

Starting off in lane number 1, we have a drum roll please… CHLOE PEARL!!! Give it up ladies in gentlemen, she is a sweet sensible rainbow of color and chic. She spends her days at the beach, drenched in y2k three piece sets, over accessorizing her wardrobe with chunky rings, bandage loop belts, and layering neck gods. She dashes corsets, fuzzy scarfs, slips, low rise, Gabbana. Chloe does it all. Her style is definitely girly and through the looks of her pictures I am interrupting a lot of pinky pie energy. Being that she can always be seen with a cheek to cheek smile. Some more honorable mentions are Lily Loomis, Claire Carmouche, and Nessa Fratantaro are just to name a few. But lastly, I wanted to sincerely recognize Chloe Felopulos. She is undoubtedly the most fashionable person I have ever endured. Also the sweetest, I made a styling Tik Tok for her and she was so sweet and loved it. It was an unreal experience. She is the queen of tone deaf camp and looks saturated with endless statement pieces that you would never expect to work. Her yankee swag seeps through her unmatched style talent. She combined masculinity with carnival feminine fun. All her looks make you look twice. It’s like being served a full course meal, but not wanting to eat it because it looks so beautiful. Everything she wears I am put into awe. My mind goes raw with the thought of how I did not think of that. The details too. Let’s name a few. Midi dress layered with long sleeves, fuzzy bucket hat, tights, and a tie. From gloves to glasses. From boots to vests. The style variety is uncanny. Put her in a trash bag and she will still look good.

My advice to any young fashionista, is to capitalize off this unique polychromic glamour look. Though it may seem a bit odd at first, learn to be comfortable with the outrageousness. At some point, all the pieces and colors and lengths fall into place. And soon you will be an elegant angel ascending from the fiery pits of colorful rainbow hell. Be bold babushkas.
