How to Become a Celebrity Stylists

Do you like celebrities? Do you like clothes? What about this, do you like celebrities and clothes? A career pathway in celebrity styling almost seems unachievable. With a positive mindset and confidence, anyone can make it in this industry.

You may be wondering, what exactly do celebrity stylists do? Life as a celebrity stylist is time demanding, like any other job in the fashion industry. Their day to day life can vary from pulling looks, tagging clothes, packaging clothes, styling outfits, collaborating with other stylists and designers, and of course refining their clients personal image and style. To break your way into this world of luxury and lavish accessorization, one must network.

An astounding and efficient way to network is through magazines. Magazines are collaborative, you are exposed to thousands of artists, creatives, models, designers every single day. Miranda Almond, celebrity stylists and senior fashion editor at Harper’s Bazaar broke into the industry this way. Magazines not only expose you to a mass amount of clientele but also will submerse you in the creative experience of pulling items for a shoot, developing an eye for style and will curate your own artistic style. I for one am envious of any celebrity stylist but am baffled by the complexities of styling some of the most recognizable people in the world. I personally would struggle setting aside my own likes and dislikes in fashion. Remember, it’s all about the client. Who you are styling and how you are styling them will affect the progression of your career.

Be nice to everyone. No matter what, we live in a small world. Maeve Riley, a celebrity stylist, advised to always be positive and always treat people with respect. Claiming that she still works with the same people since the beginning of her career. An also slight plus to networking through the fashion industry is if you give styling a swing and it doesn't work for you, you can always reach out to a past employer, asking if you could fit in better at another job.

Another amazing perk to being a celebrity stylist is that you get to experience the stories behind the looks. We all remember Jennifer Lawerence’s fall at the Oscars, but more importantly we remember the dress. The beautiful, elegant, layer, cream and satin, ball gown of glamour is tattooed in our minds forever. Think of JLo and her iconic Versace green dress. Think of Angelina Jolie and her classy elegant Lorraine Shwartz emerald earrings. All these moments were created by celebrity stylists. To name a few, Maeve Reilly, Petra Flannery, Miranda Almond, and Georgia Medley are all incredible and influential celebrity stylists. Traditionally a stylists range of clients can vary from around 3-6 celebrities per year. The relationship these stylists develop with these stars are personal. You have to remember not only are you working with celebrities but you are working with real people.

Lastly, one of the most important elements of styling is that you have to love it. You have to be obsessed with clothes and style. With art and designers and brands. You have to be head over heels, I’ll marry fashion any day, this is my job, this is my life, kind of energy. You will have to sacrifice friends' birthdays and family vacations to make sure that Givenchy dress makes it to Emma Stone in time for the red carpet. Clients are priority, clothes are priority, personal life is secondary.
